Saying Goodbye

I have a friend who really loves the Friends for a Season Poem, she completely believes that we have

Friends for a Reason
Friends for a Season
And Friends for a Lifetime

and I find I agree with her. It makes so many things so very much easier to bear...

Friends for a Reason are just that.. Friends for a Reason, you have a need that needs be fulfilled.. a Lesson to learn, They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally, or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend, and they are! They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part, or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered. And now it is time to move on.

Friends for a Season..Come into your life for a brief time,  because your turn has come to share, grow, or learn. They bring you an experience of peace, or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it! It is real! But, only for a season.

Friends for a Lifetime, those are rare and precious pearls. I find I am blessed to have several such friends.. people I know I can lean on, I can turn to, I can be away from them for years and then when we reconnect feel like we just spoke yesterday. I treasure  these women so very much. I can not believe I have friendships that have lasted for over 40 years..  I plan on keeping them for years and years and years..

Recently, a friends for a reason friendship ended and yes it ended badly. But I am grateful for the times we spent laughing, goofing off and enjoying late night Saturdays.. I will miss them but it is time to move on. To be grateful for the lesson learned, to let go of any resentment or bitterness and to accept that they have other lessons to learn.. I wish them well but in all honesty, waving goodbye to the friendship is a burden lifted.. Time to move on..

  1. Very well written, I have these friends too and I will always feel better when a friendship ends now that I have read this and can feel grateful for the time I was given and the gift I received

  2. Shauni, that was sweet. Your Friends for a Reason who have left you will surely come to the realization of what they lost and will regret it for you've shown yourself to be a true friend by writing this and wishing them well. True friends get over it when something goes wrong and I'm sorry that you've lost this friendship.

    1. It's really funny. I just spoke w/my mom about it and she has already pointed out what great things have come out of it..both the friendship and the ending.. So I guess I get to be grateful for all of it EVEN if not ESPECIALLY the way it ended.. brought me an open window elsewhere

  3. I like this, Shauni. Like it a LOT. How true it is. I'm not familiar with the poem.
