I saw this headline today 

Can Iron Man, the Lone Ranger and Superman Save the Box Office?

and I have to respond. NO.. why because it is the tired and true.. telling the same old story to the same old people. Sure we love these characters but they are movies geared towards men... I have to wonder what in the heck is wrong with Hollywood.. I know it too is run by men but seriously guys get a clue.

What is the number one genre of book sales in today's market... UM Romance books.. Now stop rolling your eyes because basically if it is written by a woman it's called Romance.. but there is such a HUGE variety out there. That I know men would love..

Honestly the list goes on and on.. these amazing women write these intense, creative, rich and UNIQUE books. Must a writer have his sex organs on the outside to be better writer? I wasn't aware that the penis actually did any of the writing.. 

Too bad we can not storm Hollywood. I say we boycott these sad familiar tunes and demand that someone get a brain..

The Hobbit is Here, The Hobbit is Here

While I have certain reservations about this movie.. I am still just a tad excited that finally it has been made. I was 10 years old when my 5th grade teacher read us this book. One chapter a day, every day after lunch. I fell in love... from that moment on I read Tolkien, anything Tolkien. I read the book to my kids as a bed time story when they were 3, 5, 7 and 9. Of course later I firmly suggested that the read LotR.. The older two like to brag that they read the books BEFORE the movie came out. Me, I read The Hobbit 40 years before it came out.. LotR.. 30.

I have to thank Mrs Gerace, who made a difference in my life by reading me this book. I know she has passed away but still, she was a teacher who made a difference.

Things I Think About

I have long admitted that my brain is just odd.. I accept it and pretty much keep it to myself.. I mean I hate to scare people away but sometimes I can't help but share what goes on in my mind.

Have you ever met a normal person? and if so can you please introduce them to me? I mean consider the fact that who gets to define normal.. there is also the scientific impossibility of having a normal person. Consider this...

In order to have a norm you must have two things exactly.. yes exactly the same! Since no two people are EXACTLY the same it is scientifically impossible to create a norm... THEREFORE if you are normal in actuality you are abnormal.. which of course causes me to segway into can I call you abbey???

A Silly Sunday

I am a huge movie fan.. some of my first memories involve going to the movies with my parents. My brother and I in our jammies in the back of my Dad's 1964 Comet (could the man get a mustang?? Nooooooooo). We saw Planet of the Apes and all of the Spaghetti Westerns this way.. As I got older we would go as often as possible.. I remember who I saw Star Wars with (Colleen Couron and empoper Norton) Who I saw Indiana Jones with (Dorene Dakeen) and who I watched Karate Kid with (Rob Holden).. When I moved out there were times when I would go to the movies with my Dad as he needed a date.. even now whenever possible I bundle up the teenagers and we go to the movies enfamilie..

To that end I thought I would share a few funny quotes from The Princess Bride and the Muppet Movie... Why? You may ask.. well because...

Mama Mia what a movie

So I finally got to see Mama Mia, I have been wanting to see it since I first saw the previews. Of course who ever thought the sounds of abba would have evolved into this... as a teen in the late 70's I could almost have guaranteed two things for sure.

1. the song YMCA would have been forgotten within a year
2. Abba was just another band of the 70's to be lost amidst all the really great music.

Good thing I didn't put any money on it...

Anyway back to the movie, yet another lesson in it is never too late. I was very happily surprised at how just plain good this was. Of course I adore both Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth so how could it fail? It was good to know, that neither good sing.. and that with the exception of Christine Baranski, they were all decidedly middle aged. Nice to see that even hunks get the middle age spread.

If you haven't seen it, rent it. It is funny, poignant and just plain sweet. It starts out with one girl wanting to find out who she is and then ends with her mother accepting who she is... Interesting concept isn't it? The idea that life just constantly keeps going.

It made me smile... It made me remember and it made me dream what more could a middle aged single mom ask for?

Twilight

Yes, I admit it, I too am a Twilight fan. It can't be helped Stephanie Meyers wrote a really good book. It draws you in with the promise of illicit love and impossible dreams. Of course originally it was directed towards the teenage girl crowd but as with all really good books it crossed barriers, moms read it, dads read it, boyfriends read it (well if they are smart the do) and so on and so forth.

Last night I went to the movie, it was excellent. They managed to stay true to the theme of the book without too much artistic license. Edward and Bella were sufficiently angst ridden, the Cullen's were appropriately sexy and compelling and the rest of the high school kids were perfectly normal which made them so stand out. I was impressed with so very much and only had a few moments where the characters just didn't quite work for me but I am sure by 2013 I will think they were perfectly cast.

Who I did adore though, was Jacob what a perfectly beautiful young man, girls forget Edward this boy is gonna only get yummier with age and I promise that is the last comment I will make on that subject.

In short, I do recommend that you go see the film, it tells a beautiful story and manages to cross generational and gender divides both.
